About the town

Pietrelcina is a town in the province of Benevento in the region of Campania, south of Italy. The name of Pietrelcina derives from Petra Pucina (which means small stone) as opposed to Petra Majuri (the major stone) located on the other bank of the Tammaro river. The town was mentioned for the first time in the 12th century by Falcone Beneventano with the term Petrapulsino. With the decree of the President of the Republic of Ciampi in 2002, the town of Pietrelcina was awarded the title of city.
