About the city

Gaeta is a city in the province of Larina, in Lazio in central Italy, south of Rome. In 2017, it had a population of 20,674. The city has played a conspicuous part in military history. Its fortifications date back to Roman times, and it has several traces of the period, including the 1st century mausoleum of the Roman general Lucius Munatius Plancus at the top of the Orlando Mountain. Gaeta's fortifications were extended, and a naval base was developed in the 15th century. In the present day, Gaeta is a fishing and oil seaport, and a tourist resort.

About the Friendship and Cooperation Agreement

In August 2010 an agreement of friendship and cooperation was signed between Bethlehem and Gaeta, with the aim to create opportunities for cultural initiatives, to promote international cooperative opportunities at both governmental and civil society level, to encourage youth exchanges, and to promote commercial and entrepreneurial activities. In 2011, the then Mayor of Bethlehem, Mr. Victor Batarseh, joined a discussion on ‘Democracy in the Middle East’ at Bethlehem University, at which one of the other participants was the then Mayor of Gaeta, Mr. Antonio Raimondi.
