About the city and the twinning
About Madaba:
Madaba, the capital of the Madaba Governorate in Jordan, has a population of approximately 60,000. Madaba is the most populous city in Jordan. The city still boasts Byzantine and Mosaic Mosaics, most notably a large mosaic map of the Holy Land dating back to the Byzantine era. Madaba is located 30 kilometers southwest of the capital, Amman.
Nearby is Mount Nebo, the Mount of Moses in the New Testament. Here, Moses died after wandering with his people in the desert for forty years. From the mountain's summit, he shared a majestic view of the Dead Sea. On clear days, the view is still possible. Many of the magnificent mosaics date back to the 16th century. If you wish to see one of the largest mosaic floors, head to Khirbet al-Mukhaijat, which is about a mile away. There, mosaic scenes depict pagan warfare and winemaking.
