About the city and the twinning
About Gubbio
Gubbio is a historic town at the foot of Mount Ingino in Umbria, central Italy. Known in antiquity as Iguvium, it was an important centre of the ancient Umbrians and later became a Roman municipality. Its medieval Palazzo dei Consoli houses the Iguvine Tablets, seven bronze tablets inscribed in the ancient Umbrian language that record religious rites and aspects of civic life.
One of Gubbio’s best-known traditions is the Festa dei Ceri, held each year on 15 May. During the festival, teams carry tall wooden structures through the town and up Mount Ingino to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, named for Gubbio’s patron saint.
