Bethlehem Mayor Mr. Hanna Hanania received a Canadian delegation headed by Mr. Graham Dattels, Representative of Canada to the State of Palestine, accompanied by Brigadier General Sonny Hatton, Commander of the Canadian Security Mission, at Bethlehem City Hall. The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Mr. Jeries Qara'a and Municipal Council Member Mr. Zoughbi Zoughbi.

Mayor Hanania welcomed the delegation and emphasized the importance of strengthening relations and cooperation with Canada. He outlined the economic and social challenges facing Bethlehem amid the current political circumstances, particularly the decline in tourism and increasing emigration, as well as the impact of Israeli settlement expansion and restrictions on freedom of movement and economic development.

He reaffirmed the Municipality's commitment to expanding international partnerships and attracting development projects that support the local economy and strengthen the resilience of Bethlehem's residents. He also stressed the importance of maintaining an international presence in Bethlehem, particularly during the Christmas season.

For his part, Mr. Dattels inquired about the city's economic situation and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Bethlehem Municipality and exploring opportunities to develop joint projects and initiatives. He also referred to the Canadian government's recent announcement of an additional CAD 100 million in assistance to Palestine, including humanitarian aid and support for peace and stability efforts.

Brigadier General Sonny Hatton highlighted the Canadian government's efforts to train and strengthen the capabilities of Palestinian security forces. He also discussed coordination efforts related to the olive harvest season, particularly initiatives aimed at facilitating Palestinian farmers' access to their agricultural lands amid restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation.

In this context, Mayor Hanania referred to the National Olive Harvest Campaign, which adopts a decentralized approach through the establishment of local committees comprising municipalities, community representatives, and national organizations. These committees coordinate with governmental and civil society institutions to develop programs supporting farmers throughout the harvest season.

He also noted Bethlehem Municipality's preparations to organize an Olive Harvest Festival in November to support local farmers, promote Palestinian products, and preserve this important element of Palestinian national heritage.

The meeting further explored opportunities to strengthen relations with Canadian cities and institutions, including the possibility of establishing a twinning partnership between Bethlehem and a Canadian city. Such a partnership would create new opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of expertise across various sectors.

The meeting concluded with both sides emphasizing the importance of maintaining communication and coordination to strengthen bilateral relations and support Bethlehem and its residents.
